Kiting enthusiasts have already managed to master boards reinforced with basalt fiber, big named brands got the production going and constantly try to improve their boards, fans of wave riding appreciate the excellent performance of their new basalt fiber reinforced boards.
A kiteboard – is a small composite board for kitesurfing or kiteboarding as the sport is also called. The kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite or the rider is towed behind a motorboat – as happens in wakeboarding.
Perhaps, the first mention of the basalt fiber reinforcement for the kiteboard appeared in 2013 on seabreeze.com.au. – the Australian surfers site. The user under the nickname StickFlick decided to introduce the technology he used for his home-crafted board to his friends.
“I wanted to show off my latest home crafted board now that I’ve had a chance to get it out on the water and put it through it paces. Its a 137×41 cm wake style board with a paulownia wood and PVC foam core and ABS rails. The thing that really novel about it is that I used 300gm Basalt Fibre in the layup as an alternative to carbon and glass. As far as I’ve seen so far this is the first time Basalt Fibre has ever been used in a kiteboard”, said StickFlick.
“Basalt Fibre is quite impressive stuff. It’s got around 70-80% of most of the physical properties of carbon with one major exception in that it stretches around 3 times further before it breaks so none of the brittle failure you see with carbon. It’s also about 40% cheaper than carbon”.
Two years later the mentions of basalt fiber reinforcement for kiteboards appear on the famous brands sites – boards manufacturers.
The company Cabrinha, a manufacturer of the Custom – an iconic wakestyle board, has been producing a line of basalt reinforced boards since 2013. The new board of the line will be released in 2016.
According to the company, it is built with the distinguished combination of Parabolic Rails™ and Volcanic Basalt. The Parabolic Rails™ provide a stiff center section and deliver a responsive tip and tail flex. The Volcanic Basalt offers vibration resistance and durability while keeping its weight to a minimum.
