Racormance came into being owing to the participation of its founders in the students’ race Formula Student, where university students from around the world compete to design, build, and drive a car on the race track. The students’ counterpart of the famous Formula One allows young engineers to apply their knowledge practically and try their hand at designing a single-seat race car.
Creating a race car, a future founder of Racormance, Enrique Romero, first used basalt fiber, and the properties of this material impressed the engineer and made him its supporter in subsequent developments.
Lightness, durability, excellent shock absorption and damping properties prompted the idea to apply basalt fiber in bicycle concept, all the more, so as cycling is a passion of Enrique and his team.
Carbon fiber currently dominates in the manufacture of bicycle frames, informs Racormance research paper, but it has a significant drawback, that is the stiffness, which is felt when riding long distances on bumpy roads.
Therefore, the scientists decided to use two composite materials: carbon fiber for the “power zone” and basalt fiber for the “comfort zone” (a part of the frame where the seat is).
“We have needed two years of researching and developing, manufacturing 6 prototypes, making more than 10.000 kilometers of test and a lot of computer simulation hours to reach our goal, make the most comfortable bike in the world and we did it”, – told us Enrique Romero.
And then there were victories in various competitions in entrepreneurship: University of Sevilla (Contest IX Business Ideas); the Copper Foundation Crosses (IV Award “Five Nines); Prize for the best provincial entrepreneurship, I AJE and Business Project Competition La Rinconada.
Nowadays, Racormance team, consisting of two engineers, one economist and one sales manager, is working in their facilities in Seville. The startup produces not only a bicycle frame made of carbon and basalt fibers but also entirely basalt seat posts.
“Last year ten basalt seat posts did the Paris-Roubaix Challenge and also the Tour of Flanders and the results were amazing”, – says Romero.
Racormance offers their customers unique opportunities: “personalization and exclusivity, starting from geometry and design and finished by the components assembly”. The team wants to reach a place in the market through exclusivity and personalization.
Now the startup is seeking for investments in the amount of 400 thousand euros in order to develop commercially the brand and to create new models, and in order to keep researching new basalt fiber applications.
