Armenia appreciated the benefits of basalt fiber for energy efficiency and seismic resistance

It was decided to develop construction standards for application and use of basalt reinforcement instead of metal one in Armenia. Narek Sarkisyan, the Minister of Urban Development declared the importance of using such advanced materials as basalt fiber and perlite to enhance energy efficiency and seismic stability of buildings.

Necessary rock studies of the gabbro and andesite basalt groups for the suitability as the raw material base for the production of continuous basalt fiber (CBF). A unique technique including laboratory melting and pilot-industrial melting at the high-tech equipment.

Due to light weight and strength, basalt fiber has an undeniable advantage for using in a seismically active zone of Armenia. Energy efficiency and ecological properties of this material make it possible to deliver cost-effective and high-quality housing solutions.

In addition, it is planned to manufacture basalt fiber in Armenia from local raw materials, thus replacing imported metal rebar with basalt one. Huge deposits of perlite in Armenia also offer opportunities for energy efficiency and safety of structures. It is perlite which can help the country enter the international market, said Sarkisyan.

Before launching mass production of basalt fiber, the Ministry took a decision to use it in projects with low seismic risk, such as road building and low-rise buildings construction, stated

At present, the Ministry representatives hold meetings with experts, developing new technologies of non-metals application in construction, to obtain the information required to launch basalt fiber manufacturing in Armenia.
