Shipbuilding mineral wool insulation protects Russian cruise ships

Mineral wool slabs are used for a new generation cruise liner (river-sea class) as a thermal insulation and fire protection solution.

The ship is being built at the Astrakhan shipyard Lotos, whereas shipbuilding insulation is supplied by Ryazan plant, part of the TechnoNICOL Corporation.

According to Dmitriy Poliakov, the Head of Shipbuilding Department, Astrakhan shipbuilders decided to use ultralight laminated slabs and fire proof laminated slabs. These materials will protect load-bearing structures of a metal hull from fire and provide insulation for engineering systems and crew quarters.

In addition to Astrakhan, Krasnoye Sormovo plant located in Nizhny Novgorod is going to apply TechnoNICOL insulation solution. This plant is building a ship with a capacity of 500 people whereas the ship from Astrakhan will be able to carry up to 300 passengers.

Laminated basalt insulation has been introduced to the company’s product range recently. It is durable, able to carry loads up to 1100 N, the finished slabs comply with the flammability group G. Last year, TechnoNICOL thermal and sound insulation for shipbuilding application obtained an IMO certificate, which confirmed compliance of the products with industry and international standards.
