Developed at the request of the Argentinean company Materiales Compuestos (MC), the construction system combines the use of five composite moulding processes, and it could be employed in dozens of other applications, such as service stations, dormitories, complete homes, etc.
“This versatility has already caught the eye of investors from Europe, Africa and Asia,” says Erivelto Mussio, G12 Project Leader.
On average, the Wet Core Pod reduces the time required to complete the construction works by up to 60 days. This is because, in traditional construction methods, the most complex stages are those related to the construction of wet spaces.
“The Wet Core Pod is already supplied with the electrical and hydraulic installations straight from the factory, only requiring the connection to the residence inlets during the construction works,” Mussio explains. “In addition, the fact that it is modular considerably increases the speed of installation, as well as the design flexibility.”
Ideal to meet government demands for popular housing, its price is quite similar to conventional methods.
“In Latin America, where the cost of labour is low, the main advantage for the construction company is the increased productivity and, as a result, the improvement of its financial cycle,” according to Mussio.
In developed countries, he estimates that the Wet Core Pod will reduce the total cost of the house by 10-15%.
The basic model occupies an area of 7.41 m², and only one structure is necessary to accommodate kitchen, bathroom and laundry. As a result of being fully made of composites, the Wet Core Pod has a high durability and better thermo-acoustic insulation than masonry. It is also lighter – each module weighs about 1000 kg – which facilitates transportation in hard-to-reach areas. The construction of the modules next to the installation site is said to be justified for volumes above 300 units.
The development of the Wet Core Pod involved the participation of two other Brazilian companies, Purcom and AJB, as well as the Argentinean companies MC and Plaquimet and the French company Composite Integrity, part of the IS Group.
