Filament winding process with desktop machine for producing a composite material

The video shows the wet filament winding manufacturing process.

Necessary rock studies of the gabbro and andesite basalt groups for the suitability as the raw material base for the production of continuous basalt fiber (CBF). A unique technique including laboratory melting and pilot-industrial melting at the high-tech equipment.

In the video, the machine is not using any resin. The fibers are being dry wounded around the mould because it was a test to be sure that the machine was working properly according to the way it was programmed. All the resources needed to develop the desktop filament winding machine were supplied by EIA University. The machine was designed and built during the period of execution of a research project developed by MAPA research group. The design was inspired by the X-Winder filament winding machine.

The state of the machine that is shown in the video is usefull mainly for teaching purposes. It is good to show how the process works and the very basic principles of it. The budget to build the machine was very low, so I had to be very “creative” if you let me say that, to overcome a lot of problems. The time was also short, so I apologise if the machine seems too improvised. Sometimes you just have to work with the resources you have at hand.
