China’s ZAX Group develops a large-volume carbon fiber pressure vessel
China’s Zhonganxin Technology Co., Ltd. (ZAX Group) has developed in cooperation with local pressure vessel manufacturers a large-volume carbon fiber pressure vessel, which successfully passed the tests of the China Special Equipment Inspection and Research Institute (CSEI).

With this move, ZAX Group has become the first domestic carbon fiber producer to meet design and user requirements to position itself in the large-volume carbon fiber pressure vessel application, says the group. At the same time, this also means that Chinese carbon fiber has reached a higher level of application in the high-end equipment manufacturing industry.
Compressed hydrogen and compressed natural gas are increasingly widely used. To transport and store them, lightweight equipment is key, especially in terms of large-volume pressure vessel. Western countries have quickly developed large-volume carbon fiber pressure vessels to handle gas pressures of 20 MPa, 35 MPa, 70 MPa, and even more than 90 MPa. In China, high prices have hampered the development of carbon fiber : in 2017, for its 1,500 tons consumption of high-end carbon fiber, China relied almost entirely on imports. By 2020, The Chinese demand for high-performance carbon fiber is expected to overtake 3,000 tons.
