The sit-ski utilises SHD Composites MTC9800 graphene-enhanced product, applying the latest in UK R&D know-how to make the sit-ski faster, lighter and, more crucially, maximise performance. MTC9800 is a graphene enhanced, honeycomb bondable epoxy resin system designed to produce a durable cost-effective component with an excellent surface finish along with enhanced resin toughness. It can be supplied on a variety of fabrics and in UD format to meet your cost and manufacturing requirements.
The sit-ski project was run as a technology demonstrator by the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, with components being manufactured by the AMRC, the MTC and the NCC. The project applies the latest in UK R&D know-how to make the sit-ski faster, lighter and, more crucially, maximise performance.

SHD Composites has been working with Applied Graphene Materials to develop a material which exhibits benefits to designers and end-users alike. The graphene-enhanced product, MTC9800, yields improvements in weight reduction programmes. Under cyclic loading, results have been demonstrated significant increases in performance. It is envisaged that this material will prove beneficial to automotive, aerospace, leisure goods and renewable energy markets.
Key benefits include enhanced fracture toughness, interlaminar strength and fatigue performance.
Technology experts from the seven High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult centres have used their range of technology capabilities to demonstrate how current and emerging manufacturing technologies in areas such as sensors, composite materials, 3D printing and virtual reality design techniques can be applied to achieve success in a new – and possibly unexpected – application.
Working together with Anna Turney – double Paralympic downhill skier, Sean Rose – Double Paralympic and double X-Games athlete, and the team from the HVM Catapult, showed that collective capability can improve performance in a niche area, which is new to the HVM Catapult. This video shows highlights of the technology applications in the new sit-ski and demonstrates how the new prototype is being tested on the slopes.
