Building and construction are areas with great growth potential for composite materials. Composites can improve buildings and facilitate the construction methods in order to obtain results of much higher value than those by traditional materials.
Cel Components has 25 years of experience in the production of sandwich panels and honeycomb materials, the team is trained and qualified to respond to problematics of different industries and customize their products accordingly. Cel Components strongly invests on R&D, in fact, in its two internal laboratories products are being invented and tested every day, turning Cel into a main actor in composites science.
The latest projects have included a strategic use of composites for ballistic purposes as, when carefully designed, they can absorb strong shockwaves, retain fragments, are lightweight and transportable. The inclusion of different materials can improve the quality of the final product; for example a para aramidic textile, prevents the perforation of the panel while a dense aluminum structure would absorb the impact, causing a plastic deformation of the material.
The aluminium-para aramidic textile conformation has lately been used in the new elevated parking lot above the existing Termini train station in Rome, covering a surface of almost 15.000 square meters.
The addition of panels was a last minute strategy, adopted on a nearly completed structure; the quest was to make this new parking lot safe in case of a terrorist attack, using an extremely thin and light layer of material that could also prevent the collapsing of the building over the lower levels and trains.
As such, the system has been studied to be used only in the parking lot lowest floor and, together with the bearing structure, it should be able to withstand the weight of the collapsed upper levels.
To acquire knowledge in the subject, parts of the building were built in scale 1:1 and several explosion and laboratory testing have been made, monitoring the results with latest generation devices.
The resulting panel layering includes an extremely dense aluminium honeycomb and skins, together with various layers of Para-Aramidic textile overlapping each other so that the fibers would work at 360 Degrees.
Each safety requirement implies a different solution, starting from safety modules to protecting devices for vehicles; nonetheless Cel Components will design a customized solution around any problematic.
