Composite Resources (Rock Hill, SC, USA), who is specialized in composite manufacturing for defense, industry and sport cars, and Pyromeral Systems (Barbery, France), who has developed glass-ceramic and oxide composites technologies for high temperature applications, have set up manufacturing alliance.
Composite Resources has access to Pyromeral Systems technologies to be able to manufacture composite components for elevated temperatures for US defense applications where ITAR restrictions apply.
Pyromeral Systems has a long history (since 1984) in developing and industrializing material technologies for high temperature applications. Its parts manufacturing capabilities have shown successes in race cars and defense in Europe. Pyromeral Systems has developed three main material technologies.
Two of them are based on glass-ceramic matrix, proprietary technology, having either carbon (PyroKarb) or silicon-carbide fiber reinforcement (PyroSic).
These materials are designed to be used at low temperature with nearly same techniques and toolings as those used for conventional carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). PyroSic has a working temperature of 700°C and offers tensile strength of 300 MPa and flexural strength of 350 MPa. PyroKarb has a service temperature of 350°C and offers tensile strength of 250 MPa and flexural strength of 270 MPa. Both materials are also completely fire resistant.
The third technology material is PyroXide, a newly patented technology (2019), being an alternative to usual oxide-oxide solutions and showing a more flexible manufacturing capability for wider geometrical possibilities. It is also capable for long exposure at very high temperatures: for example, it can withstand thousands of ours at 1000°C without any loss of mechanical properties. PyroXide uses 3M’s Nextel ceramic oxide fibers with a ceramic matrix. It has a tensile strength of 300 MPa and flexural strength of 350 MPa.
Applications of these materials include heatshields, exhaust systems, radomes and hypersonic structures.
