General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck plant becomes first assembly plant fully devoted to electric vehicles

A new era has begun for General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which has been renamed Factory ZERO, as it becomes the company’s first fully dedicated electric vehicle assembly facility.

Responsible for producing a variety of all-electric trucks and SUVs, Factory ZERO is part of GM’s ongoing strategy toward producing all-electric vehicles, including the world’s first all-electric GMC HUMMER EV.

With initial production scheduled to begin in late 2021, the GMC HUMMER EV will be the first all-electric pickup truck offered by GM.

Since opening in 1985, the former Detroit-Hamtramck plant has built more than 4 million vehicles. Now, more than three decades later, Factory ZERO is poised to begin its next chapter with comprehensive upgrades to the paint and body shops, and to general assembly. The updates will include new machines, conveyors, controls and tooling that will be needed to begin building all-electric vehicles.

Factory ZERO will be an exemplary facility in sustainable manufacturing, leading technology and tooling, dedicated employee training, and state-of-the-art production of world-class vehicles like the GMC HUMMER EV. The facility will lead GM into a new era of manufacturing sustainability as it pushes toward a zero-emissions future while remaining a place where first jobs are started, careers are transformed and community relationships are formed.

Battery cells for vehicles produced at Factory ZERO will be manufactured in Lordstown, Ohio, under GM’s joint venture with LG Chem.

Since the fall of 2018, GM has committed to making investments in Michigan in order to bring all-electric vehicles to market, including investments at Orion Assembly, the GM battery lab in Warren, Brownstown Battery and now at Factory ZERO.
